Hawks Set Sights on Vassar, Women Show Resilience in Tough Loss

As we move deeper into the fall season, both of our New Paltz rugby teams continue to grow through challenges on and off the field. This weekend, the men's team takes on their longtime rivals Vassar in what promises to be one of the toughest games of the season, while the women’s team has a break but will see a few players join USMMA to get more game time. Despite a tough loss for the women last weekend, their resilience and commitment are shining through, and the future is bright for both teams.

Women’s Team: A Challenging Day at Siena, Break This Weekend

It was a tough outing for the women’s team as they traveled to Siena last Saturday, facing a well-drilled and experienced side. With several veterans out due to injury or scheduling conflicts, the Hawks fielded a team largely composed of rookies, bolstered by two players from USMMA who joined the ranks after last week’s scrimmage.

Team president and co-captain Celina Nehme reflected on the match with her usual optimism, acknowledging the challenges they faced but also the grit shown by the newcomers.

“A bit of a rough game to say the least! We lost 55-5 against Siena. We had the USMMA girls we played against last weekend join us, so that helped, but the game was almost entirely rookies since all but two of our vets were injured or unable to go.”

Coach Thierry Duclay approached the loss with a pragmatic perspective, noting the uphill battle they faced but focusing on the invaluable lessons gained. Despite the scoreline, he saw resilience in his young squad and applauded their fierce determination.

“In short, we lost 55-5. Last year, same team, same field, we lost 98-0! This time around, 10 of our players had never played 15s before. We knew we were walking into an ambush, but the girls fought hard regardless. They gave everything on the field.”

Though the score may not have reflected the full effort of the team, Duclay was quick to praise the spirit and tenacity of his players, many of whom were getting their first real taste of 15s rugby.

“The score doesn’t do justice to how hard our girls fought. Their level of commitment and intensity was outstanding, and I’m really proud of their combative spirit. This experience, especially for our rookies, is invaluable as we continue building this team.”

Looking ahead, Duclay remains optimistic despite the challenges. With Hofstra suspended this weekend, some of the New Paltz players will join USMMA for their game against Molloy on Sunday at noon. Duclay believes these experiences are key to the team’s long-term growth and success.

“Every game and every practice confirms that we are heading in the right direction. Despite the physical challenge, they walked off the field with smiles. We’re rebuilding, and I couldn’t be prouder of where we’re going. Go Hawks!”

The women’s team will be looking to regroup and continue their development this Sunday as they travel to Hofstra for their next test. Kickoff is at 1:00 pm.

Men’s Team: Rivalry Game at Vassar This Weekend

After a much-needed bye week, the men’s team has had time to recuperate and sharpen their strategy ahead of one of the biggest fixtures on the calendar: a clash against long-time rivals, Vassar. The intensity surrounding this match is palpable, as the Hawks prepare to cross the Hudson River and face off against a team that has been a tough nut to crack in recent years.

Co-captain Fred Asher has no illusions about the challenge ahead but feels confident about the depth of this year’s squad.

“Vassar poses a very daunting challenge. I feel great about the team, and we’ll hopefully have some of our starters back from injury for that game.”

Asher’s focus, though, remains unwavering, fueled by a desire to maintain their unbeaten run. The hunger to make history at New Paltz rugby is evident.

“In my time at NPRFC, we’ve never beaten Vassar, but this is the deepest squad in years, so the time is now. Keeping the undefeated season alive is driving us hard.”

With the rivalry renewed, and the stakes high, it’s set to be an explosive encounter at Vassar Farms this Saturday. Kickoff is at 1:00 pm. Make the trip and show your support!

Support Juan’s Recovery

As many of you know, Juan Molina from the men’s team is recovering from surgery following a serious injury sustained earlier this season. His family is covering all of the medical expenses out of pocket, and the team has organized a GoFundMe to help alleviate some of the financial burden. Any contribution, large or small, would make a huge difference.

Thank You for Supporting the Team

Last week, we reached out to ask for your support in purchasing canopy tents for gameday and a memorial plaque for Raymond Rattray. Though we’re still working toward our goal, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to those who continue to stand by the rugby program. Your commitment to helping the next generation of Hawks is deeply appreciated.

If you’d like to contribute to the team’s needs or help honor Raymond’s legacy, donations can be made via the New Paltz Rugby Legends Venmo account:

Any excess funds will be directed toward helping Juan Molina with his medical bills. No amount is too small, and every contribution helps the team grow stronger!
