Spring Wrap-Up: Senior Day, Alumni Weekend, and Team Updates

Spring Season Winds Down for New Paltz Rugby

As the school year comes to a close, both the men’s and women’s rugby teams have been hard at work on and off the field. With tournaments behind them and Senior Day and Alumni Weekend on the horizon, there’s a lot to celebrate, reflect on, and look forward to.

Women’s Team: Growth On and Off the Pitch

The women’s team wrapped up tournament play this spring, competing at the Tri-State 7s Championship and the Beast of the East tournament. While wins proved elusive, the team continues to grow under new head coach Angelica "Gel" Silva-Perez, gaining valuable experience for seasons to come.

Off the field, the team has made an impact as well:

• All-Conference Honors: Liam Gorlin and Danalee Gutierrez were selected as New Paltz’s representatives for Tri-State All-Conference Standouts.

• Earth Day Volunteering: On April 22nd, the team spent the day giving back at the Phillies Bridge Farm Project for their Earth Day initiative.

• T-Shirt Fundraiser: The team is currently selling t-shirts to raise awareness for transgender athletes in rugby, supporting the National Center for Transgender Equality in response to recent NCR policies.

A special thank you to the women’s team for embodying the spirit of rugby both on and off the field this spring.

Men’s Team: Tournament Battles and Senior Send-Off

The men’s team stayed busy with tournaments and friendly matches this April:

• Home Sevens Tournament: The Hawks hosted Maritime, Seton Hall, and Molloy, finishing 1-1-1 (beat Molloy, tied Maritime, lost to Seton Hall).

• Beast of the East: New Paltz went 2-3 in pool play, placing third in their group and narrowly missing the knockout rounds.

• Hudson Valley Friendly: The team faced Hudson Valley RFC, which featured a few NP alumni, offering a lively preview of the upcoming Alumni Game.

Senior Day is tomorrow, April 27th at 1:00 PM at home, where the men will host Vassar and Oneonta in their final matches of the season. Come out to support the seniors in their last hit-out wearing New Paltz colors!

Alumni Weekend is Almost Here!

May 3-4, 2025 marks New Paltz Rugby’s 40th Anniversary Alumni Weekend. Here's the schedule:

• Friday, May 2nd:

  • Golf Tournament during the day (contact Joe Crimi to register).

  • Evening gathering at P&G’s.

• Saturday, May 3rd:

  • Noon: Annual Alumni Games At the rugby field behind Esopus Hall.

  • Post-Match BBQ Stick around after the games for food and socializing at the rugby field.

  • 9:00-11:00 PM: Formal Banquet at P&G’s

    • $30 for open bar + food

    • $10 for food-only entry

You must be CIPPed to participate in the Alumni Game for insurance purposes.
